Nation Autism Day

Today is National Autism Day throughout this country. Autism is so misunderstood that even health insurance companies do not recognize it as a disease and do not cover the costs of medical treatments.

Why is that so important? Because those medical costs can easily range from $50,000 to $100,000 a year for severe Autism Spectrum Disorder. That type of expense can bankrupt the average family and the only option is to not treat the patient, which can cause even greater problems. This is also a type of condition that is not generally covered for free at a hospital as it is not quickly or easily diagnosed.

South Carolina passed a law last year requiring health insurance companies to provide insurance for confirmed instances of Autism, up to $50,000. While this may not cover all of the treatment expenses of the most severe cases, it goes a long way towards helping the majority of patients.

Perhaps this is something we should look at next year – encouraging our insurance companies to do something along the same lines. What do you think?
